This past October my best friend and I took a mother-daughter trip with our moms and WOW it was a blast! If you haven’t gone on a mother-daughter trip before, I’d definitely recommend it! We decided to go to Charleston, SC because it was exactly halfway between our two schools (Florida State and Virginia Tech). It was a looong drive (for both of us!), but I’m sure I speak for both of us when I say it was sweet to be able to spend some quality time with our moms in the car!
We took off on Thursday night and had Friday and Saturday in Charleston. I had always seen Charleston featured in Southern Living and Better Homes & Garden magazines, so I was so excited to finally be seeing the beautiful home I had dreamed of for years!
As an avid tea drinker, I was on cloud nine when I found out that Charleston is the home to the only tea plantation in America. It’s only about 40 minutes outside of the downtown area, so we decided to hop in the car and go see this North American wonder. Let me paint a picture for you of life an hour after leaving downtown Charleston: the air smelled wonderful, it was sunny and 75, and we were sipping every kind of iced tea you can imagine. It was small and cute and family run and basically everything I ever dreamed a tea plantation being! It also definitely made me want to live on a tea plantation one day!
If you know me at all, you know I love HGTV and will gladly talk about Chip and Jo and shiplap and interior design all day every day. A few weeks before we headed to Charleston, my mom and I found out that they were having a home and garden tour in Charleston. Luckily, my best friend and both our moms share my passion for homey things and so we decided to all get tickets!
Some houses were just like I imagined: perfect, southern, light, airy, beautiful plantation-style homes. Others took me totally by surprise! There were some that were shockingly modern, with New York vibes and some that looked like they were straight off MTV Mansions or something like that! It was so fun to get to peek into other people’s homes for an afternoon (is that creepy?) and I’m so glad that we got to see such a broad range of houses!
We spent the night walking around all the shops and eating probably 8 biscuits each haha! I heard from a friend that Callie’s Hot Little Biscuits were the best biscuits EVER, and they called Charleston home. A biscuit fanatic myself, I just had to try every flavor and variation on the plain buttery flaky original that they offered. Five pounds later, I was oh so satisfied. If you ever go to Charleston, you HAVE to go try a biscuit. They were so good that I actually drove up to Atlanta a couple of weeks later with some friends to go to their other location!
This trip could not have come at a better time. I was finally adjusted to the swing of College, but this gave me the chance to still feel a little slice of home by seeing my mom and my best friend all in one weekend. There is nothing quite as joyous as a sweet hometown reunion over some tea and biscuits in a beautiful southern city!
Charleston has so much to offer that we didn’t get to experience, and I am sure that I will be making another trip back up there at some point. But for now, I am holding on to the sweet memories of a sunny weekend with the people I love most.
